Remember when you weighed over 300 pounds and you literally felt “stuffed” into your clothes? Elastic became your closest buddy! Do you recall how self-conscience you were to not bend over for fear of busting out your seat? Losing weight so quickly is an adventure, to say the least. We go through a lot of size changes every few weeks. I recall when I was losing, I was going to the thrift stores every three weeks to buy more clothing to fit me until the next drop in size came. Not very expensive when they are “used” items. It was something I had to do!

Some patients have no clue that they are trapped in their baggies until someone points that out to them. This should be done in the kindest of ways, or in the manner that suits your friendship. If you truly are friends with someone who is trapped in the baggies, then you can be blunt and to the point by saying, “Get out of those baggies!” Others may require a gentler tone if you are to remain friends.

What if nobody is telling you that you’re trapped in the baggies? Does that mean you’re not?

NO. It probably means that they are too afraid to tell you at risk of hurting your feelings.

This is where I jump in… I’m going to give you some clues right now as to how to judge whether or not you are still wearing baggy clothes unnecessarily.

You know you’re trapped in the baggies when:

You’ve lost 50 pounds and you haven’t put on the next smaller clothing size. Fifty pounds is a LOT, and it SHOWS!

The shoulder seams are nearing closer to your elbows.

Your shirts or sweaters fit you like short dresses.

You can grab a huge fistful of material and still not be touching your body.

Your shirt or dresses fit you like oversized maternity wear.

Your shirts have leftover “stretch bumps” stuck in them where you don’t have bumps like that anymore.

Your feet shift back and forth inside your shoes when you walk.

Your pantyhose can be pulled up to almost your armpits.

You become tangled as you walk because your pant legs get knotted up in between your legs.

Your half slip falls right off of you and unto the floor.

Your tank tops have become slings for the…

Your sleeves flap in the wind like sails.

Your turtlenecks are now tortoise-necks that don’t’ even touch your neck.

Your rings are falling off. Put them AWAY until you can get them resized… I’ve seen the tears of people who’ve lost their rings!

Your socks stretch above the knees.

The rump of your pants sag low and appear to be harboring pockets of air.

Getting the idea now? If you are guilty of any one of these baggie symptoms, I strongly urge you to go to your nearest store and buy a smaller size!

I can promise you, that if you get out of the baggies, you will feel so much better about yourself, you weight-loss achievements, and begin to appreciate in a deeper sense what the surgery has done for you. It’s time to stop beating yourself up with unfounded criticism.

This certainly WAS a rough lesson on you, wasn’t it? Well, at least you have a clue now and you didn’t have to get mad at a friend telling you! And if one day your fiend DOES tell you that you’re trapped in the baggies, tell them “thank you” and mean it by wearing clothes that flatter you.

With the economy on the mend, a lot of people in the material handling industry are expecting good times without having to make any changes in the way they do business. When the "dot. coms" were flying high, they experienced rapid growth by the simple method of offering impossibly low prices and constant expansion into markets about which they knew nothing. Eventually, of course, this "lose a little on each deal but make it up in volume" business model blew up in their faces. The balloons popped, one by one, and the economy followed them down the tube.

In the material handling industry, this discredited business model is still very much in evidence. Too many companies have played the merger game, getting themselves involved in markets that they know nothing about. Too many have played the numbers game, moving money from one pocket to another to make themselves look good for one more quarter (this is called managing for stockholder value), totally forgetting about long-range planning.

Worst of all, too many companies have bought into the concept of forgoing profits in pursuit of market share, with the idea of becoming profitable once the competition is eliminated. It's called "buying a job," meaning submitting a bid that allows for little or no profit. Theoretically, this has two benefits. It gets you the job, which makes your sales figures (if not your profits) look impressive. More importantly, for some people, it prevents your competition from getting the job.

But let's look at the downside. Without profits, you have no money to invest in research and development, capital expenditures, etc. Your growth is all on paper, and will disappear as soon as you run out of money to buy jobs with.

With minimal profit margins, you have neither the money nor the inclination to service the sale after it is made. The result is an unhappy customer, and that is never good news for the long term prospects of your company.

Finally, let's say that your strategy of underbidding the competition works, and your nearest competitor goes bankrupt. What happens? Somebody buys his assets for 25 cents on the dollar and opens a new business. Since his initial investment was so low, he can undercut your prices. You haven't eliminated competition, you've made it worse.

Profit is not a dirty word. Nobody -- least of all the customer -- benefits when profit is eliminated from the economic equation. I'm not saying we shouldn't be looking for efficiencies that will allow us to keep prices down while maintaining a reasonable profit margin. Of course the customer benefits from lower prices, but the economy in general and the material handling industry in particular will be much healthier when we all admit to wanting our fair share. If you're satisfied with a 3% profit, I suggest you buy a government bond. It's safer.

Sometimes we mistakenly proceed to resolve a problem based on what we THINK the customer was saying. This third step of the process allows us to clarify and draw out information to make sure that we understand the customer’s true concern. Examples of clarifying might include:

• “What I hear you saying is……is that right?”

• “Can you tell me more about…..?”

• “How may I help you….?”

• “What were you hoping would happen…?”

Clarifying leads us to the appropriate solution in a more efficient manner.

Step 4 – Present Resolution

The fourth step is to present a resolution. Presenting a resolution is not a challenge if we’ve done the first three steps properly. As we present the resolution, we want to state specifically what we are going to do for the customer. We may also offer alternatives. Note: As we discussed in Step 1: Strategize, it is critical to understand your parameters – what you CAN do for the customer and what you CAN’T do.

Step 5 – Checkback

The checkback is our opportunity to make sure that the customer is satisfied and feels good about the resolution.

Examples of checkbacks include:

• “How does that sound?”

• “What do you think about x?”

• “Are you with me?”

• “Does that make sense?”

• “Will that meet your needs?”

• “Would that be satisfactory?”

Applying the Five-Step Process

The following example illustrates a customer-focused approach, using the Five-Step Process.

Step 1: Strategize: Our strategy is to retain the customer whenever possible. We want to provide the customer with a positive experience while balancing both the business and customer needs. We don’t want to simply accept return merchandise since we know we will lose the customer.

A customer calls to complain about the quality of the product he received.

Step 2: Acknowledge: “I apologize that the product was not of the quality that you expected. I understand your frustration. I can help.”

Step 3: Clarify: “In order for us to improve on the quality – and for me to better serve you, may I ask what specific areas were of poor quality?”

Step 4: Present Resolution: “We would be happy to exchange the product for a similar product of higher quality.”

Depending on the customer’s responses, we may actually have to go through the Five-Step Process many times during one customer interaction. Any ole place will do when it is time to study, right? Wrong, there are some places that are much better to try and study than others. So what makes them good or bad? How does a student know if they are in the correct place or with the right people? That is the entire focus of this article, to address the do’s and don’ts of study places and groups. Read on to see if your study place is the best one possible! If your grades are less than what you would like you may want to change your studying arrangements.

Best Place To Study

There is not one right or one wrong answer when it comes to different students. Everyone has different comfort zones and one place may not work for someone else. This is not a one size fits all situation. Though the place and particulars of the study place will change from person to person there are some commonalities of a good study place. It is very difficult to study, do homework or concentrate where there is a lot of noise or distractions. Now for some music is invigorating and for others it must be complete silence. In most cases a light music in the background may actually get the creative juices flowing. This depends on the individual and must be experimented with to get the right combination.

If possible the most comfortable place to study is often in the home of the student. Sometimes this is not conducive to a productive study session because of others in the house, noise as well as other distractions. If the home study environment is desired it may be a good idea to find a time when others are not home or at night when everyone is in bed and quite! An at home study session also allows the student to have a healthy snack on hand. It is recommended that a snack be close because it actually helps the studying process. Feeding the brain a health snack is never a bad choice.

Issues such as lighting, temperature, and comfortable should always be addressed to make the most of a study session. Any one of the mentioned issues can cause a student to be distracted and even take away from the information that they are working on. When a student is too hot, they may become aggravated and lose interest in studying. On the other hand if the house or study area is too cold the student may lose concentration because they are cold. Keep the temperature at a comfortable level to increase performance and ability. Lighting is also very important. Improper lighting can cause the student to strain to see the words or read. This in turn can cause a headache or neck strain leading to a poor study session. Light is also associated with mood, so make sure that the study area is well light! Comfort is equally important and students should try and find a desk/chair combination that is comfortable. It is hard to remain in a seat when a back, neck or legs are aching because the seating is uncomfortable.

Worst Place To Study

Any place that causes a distraction is the worst place to study. Some of the worst cited are restaurants, laundry mats, offices or anywhere that there are lots of people or transactions taking place. Restaurants are noisy have frequent outbursts of laughter or a children crying, leaving the student unable to concentrate. The office setting is not a good one because the student is often interrupted with an incoming customer, request for service or other duties of the job. Even if the student is not directly involved their attention still focuses on what ever is going on around them. Even the background noise of another conversation or phone ringing can cause information to be taken in or processed incorrectly. It is simply not worth the risk and students should strive for a place that is quite and free of distractions to study.

Unfortunately, sometimes study groups are not the best idea when studying either. The more people that are in the group the more distractions, stories and other details unrelated to the topic at hand. While study groups can be extremely effective they can also cause a hindrance to an individual needing to study. It should be made clear to the entire study group that the test is the topic and all socializing can transpire before or after the study session. If the group is not working out for you then simply excuse yourself and find another place to study. After all your grade is riding on studying and it is important that you take every precaution to ensure a good grade and graduation.
